For one day every spring, Stockton-on-Tees becomes a maze of guitar riffs, packed rooms

and fans sprinting between venues clutching pints and stage times. It’s chaotic, loud,

occasionally sweaty – and exactly how I like it.

On Saturday 4 April, my festival season opens with the much-loved one-day festival

returning for its 15th year, once again turning the town centre into a multi-venue

celebration of new music, cult heroes and hometown pride.

Stockton Calling has always thrived on a simple idea: keep everything close, and pack as

many great bands as possible into a single day. Instead of fields and tents, the festival

unfolds across a network of venues dotted around the town centre. Fans drift between

spaces like ARC, KU Stockton and the Georgian Theatre, each room offering a different

atmosphere and a fresh wave of artists ready to grab attention.

It’s a format that every year has given me that feeling of opening a door to reveal your next

favourite band. With the festival times and locations now published, you can start your

planning.

This year’s line-up keeps that spirit intact. At the top of the bill sit Hard-Fi, the Staines

indie heavyweights whose sharp, streetwise rock soundtracked the mid-2000s. With their

punchy mix of indie hooks and dancefloor swagger, the band’s songs still feel tailor-made

for a packed room of fans shouting every word back at the stage.

Elsewhere on the bill is a return that carries a deeper emotional weight for the town.

Young Rebel Set, formed in Stockton back in the late 2000s, built a fiercely loyal following

with their anthemic indie rock and big-hearted songwriting. Their reunion in recent years

has been met with huge warmth from fans who never quite let the band go, and playing

Stockton Calling feels like a homecoming in the truest sense.

But Stockton Calling has never been just about nostalgia. The festival’s reputation has

been built on spotting rising talent early, giving new artists a stage – sometimes literally

above a bar – where they can convert curious listeners into lifelong fans.

Among the acts ready to seize that opportunity this year are Gurriers, the ferocious Irish

noise-punk outfit whose snarling guitars and unfiltered intensity have made them one of

the most talked-about new bands on the circuit.

Then there are The Molotovs, a London trio who channel rock’n’roll attitude through

razor-sharp riffs and restless momentum. They arrive in Stockton with a growing reputation

as one of the UK’s most exciting young live bands – exactly the sort of group that Stockton

Calling was built to showcase.

That blend of established names and hungry newcomers is the festival’s secret weapon.

It’s a moment every Stockton Calling regular knows well. One minute you’re killing time

between sets, the next you’re squeezed against a wall watching a band that might be

headlining festivals in a few years.

The North East’s own scene also runs through the festival’s DNA. Stockton Calling has

always championed regional talent alongside national touring acts, creating a line-up that

reflects the depth of music coming out of the area. For local bands, the festival is both a

celebration and a proving ground – a chance to play to bigger crowds and show visiting

fans exactly what the region has to offer.

That sense of discovery is what keeps people coming back. Stockton Calling doesn’t rely

on giant headline slots or blockbuster production. Instead, it leans into the raw excitement

of live music at its most immediate – the kind you experience shoulder-to-shoulder with

strangers in a dark room while a band you’ve never heard before suddenly blows you

away. Fifteen years in, that formula still works. Stockton Calling 2026 promises exactly

what it always has: a whirlwind tour of the UK’s best new artists, played out across one

town in a single, unforgettable day.

Bring comfortable shoes. You’re going to be running between venues.
