Daytime TV tell us of their upcoming plans as they prepare to play Rough Trade East for Record Store Day

After their stunning return to live shows last month, indie rockers Daytime TV play the Rough Trade East for Record Store Day. They are among the latest signings to Marshall Records that has curated a line-up of the most essential bands in the music scene. We were lucky enough to catch up for some questions about their upcoming releases and announcements.
Latch Magazine: You've recently released "Pause". How has the reception for that been from the fans?
Will: We've been super happy with it! It's our first song in, like, 18 months and we're kind of hidden away making lots of new music with an exciting new producer. I mean, for us, when we release a song, it's no longer ours. So it's like, however they want to enjoy it, it's fine, but we've been getting a lot of nice messages and it's been doing the rounds on press, radio, Spotify and all that. So happy days.
John: Yeah, we did a gig not too long ago. I think it was only a few days after it was released. Fans turned up, already knowing all the words. So that's got to be a good sign. It's funny because we did this thing in the show where we actually paused in the middle of the song. And I can get lots of messages, with people saying, like, when is it? Because we want to pause with you. So we need to keep them guessing and just pause at different times. Just freak them out. But yeah, it's been really cool. It's the start of what feels like a kind of exciting chapter for us. So we're just testing the waters and we've got plenty more where that came from.
Latch Magazine: And then you touched a little on it there. How was it to play that show at The Old Blue Last? Kind of like your return to live scene, you know it's a good show when there's sweat dripping off the walls.
Will: It was, I think we really crammed people in because it was a free show. And then as soon as we saw the number of tickets, we were like, they ain't going to fit. So yeah, it was great fun. It was a really good energy in the room. We've got to see loads of old fans, and loads of new fans. We really enjoyed it, it was sick. I mean, debuting new tracks is always a bit nervy because I just don't know how they're going to go down and you don't know if we're going to get it right. But it went super well and it felt like something we needed to do. It felt like a sort of relief for us. It was really, really great. Loved it.
Latch Magazine: That's great and touches on the next question. How did the new songs feel to play live? "Anger management" in particular, really went across amazingly. It really brought the house down. So how was it to play songs that people hadn't heard before and then immediately get that kind of reaction?
Will: Yeah, speaking of release, "Anger Management" definitely was that, it was amazing. There was a moment when we were playing a couple songs that we can't talk about yet, that are unreleased, and you could just see people's reactions to them. They weren't quite singing along because they hadn't learnt the lyrics yet. But you could just see everyone was in the music and they were having such a good time. So I think that's the main thing, really.
I'd said earlier in the day, if it's on and if there's space, I'm going to get in the crowd. And there was not space but it was on. So I got in, and there are two types of people when you jump into a crowd. There's the people that kind of look at you and they're like, do not come anywhere near me. I don't want to be involved. And then there are the people that are like, let's go. And luckily everyone was up for it. So it was wicked, man. We had a great time.
Latch Magazine: Amazing! That's great. And just to close out our questions. How important is it for you to be playing Rough Trade East here for Record Store Day and how important to bands such as yourselves are these independent red stores?
John: My uncle used to own a record store and we always used to queue out on the street, well I didn't, but everyone queued out on the street for records all day. And it was always such a big thing in my family. I've been going to it for years and getting all the special editions. So to actually play at one feels pretty cool. And I've also been coming to this shop for years as well. So it's such a good bringing together of community.
Will: You can see that even just putting on a free show is an awesome thing. We've already had a bunch of fans come and say hello. And there's no age limit to this show. So there's loads of really young fans that are just have never been able to come to a show so that's cool. And also just, you don't have to spend loads and loads of money to come, like if we're playing big festivals. We always get these messages from fans being like, oh, I'm really sorry, I can't come support you at this festival. And we say oh my god, don't worry! It costs over a hundred quid. Obviously, we're not expecting you to come to every show. But it's so nice the support we have is incredible. So we're very lucky.
Latch Magazine: And then just to wrap it up here, I'll just say, do you guys have a timeline for your new releases, new album, potentially a tour, any all that stuff? I know the fans are eager for it!
We do, but we can't tell you yet! We've got a lot of new stuff coming, which we're very, very excited about. It's closer than you even know!
